Buildings

Brockenbrough’s vertical (building) design experience ranges from simple office upfits to turnkey commercial and industrial facilities. With a focus on energy efficiency, Brockenbrough will design lighting, power distribution, HVAC and plumbing systems to meet your needs. Brockenbrough also provides all building structural design.

Libraries

Brockenbrough’s experience with libraries include site selection, upgrade feasibility, full site design, and construction administration. The last two library projects were both LEED projects and the site designs included several innovative stormwater management practices. We were able to design one library as a shared site with an existing elementary school to share parking.

Fire Stations

Brockenbrough has experience with both new stations and renovations/upgrades at existing fire stations. Our designs incorporate the unique aspects of a fire station that include heavy vehicles, 24/7 operation, refueling, training, and emergency signalization.

Parking Lots

Brockenbrough has investigated and designed hundreds of parking lot projects. This includes new facilities as well as expansion, repair and ADA upgrades for asphalt, concrete, and other pavement surfaces.

Historic Properties

Brockenbrough is fortunate to have worked on many important projects with historical significance such as renovations to the Virginia Governor’s Executive Mansion, the National Theatre Renovation in Richmond, Virginia, restoration and storm water improvements at Arlington National Cemetery, and Sailor’s Creek Battlefield State Park historic Hillsman House. We understand the sensitive nature of these projects and have experience working with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.

Visitor Centers

Visitor centers have unique characteristics similar to interstate welcome centers. The Brockenbrough team is experienced in designing visitor centers to meet those unique challenges. Recent experience designing new and upgraded Virginia State Parks Visitor Centers includes a new LEED Silver Visitor Center at Sailors Creek Battlefield State Park where Brockenbrough provided full-service civil, mechanical, electrical, and structural engineering.

Interstate Rest Areas & Welcome Centers

Brockenbrough engineers have extensive experience in the design of interstate rest areas and welcome centers. This experience dates back to the 1960’s and continues today with recent experience at numerous Virginia interstate locations including the new LEED Gold I-95 Rest Area and Welcome Center in Fredericksburg. Brockenbrough provides complete in-house engineering design services for civil, mechanical, electrical, structural and landscape features.

Offices

Offices need to provide functionality for the occupant. Brockenbrough will discuss your current and future needs and tailor our mechanical, electrical, plumbing and structural designs to your requirements and budget. In existing spaces, our experience includes the design of lighting systems with automatic controls, system furniture power/telecommunications infrastructure, break rooms, training rooms and conference rooms.

LEED Certification

Brockenbrough is a sustainably-focused engineering and consulting firm. Brockenbrough stays at the forefront of this important philosophy of building design through the continuous education of staff, clients, and community. Brockenbrough became a member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in 2006, and has LEED-accredited engineers experienced in sustainable design, the LEED rating system, and the LEED Certification process. With multiple LEED certified buildings completed, we bring a wealth of experience to all of our designs. We also “practice what we preach.” In 2009, Brockenbrough’s office became the first private LEED for Commercial Interiors (LEED-CI) facility in the Richmond, Virginia area.
