Structural Engineering

Efficiency and economy of design are paramount to sound structural engineering. At Brockenbrough, there is broad technical expertise in the design of specialized structures found in buildings, industrial construction and petroleum/fuel systems.

Brockenbrough offers design of steel columns, beams, girders, trusses, movement-resistant frames, as well as open web steel joists and steel decks. This includes the bolting and welding requirements for connections. Brockenbrough also offers design of load-bearing masonry walls, masonry skin walls, masonry retaining walls and masonry pilasters as well as timber design and engineered wood design.

Seismic and wind forces have major effects on the design of buildings and other structures. At Brockenbrough, the latest IBC, NEHRP, and ASCE 7 provisions are used in seismic and wind design. A complete set of design documents are developed to provide all structures and building components, the required resistance to these forces. Experience includes designing structures in high seismic areas such as California; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; and Greece. Brockenbrough has also designed many structures along the hurricane coastline of the East Coast of the United States and in Key West, Florida, where the wind can reach 150 miles per hour.

Brockenbrough’s structural engineering team has the experience and expertise to provide design of all types of retaining walls, which can be designed of concrete, wood, masonry, steel, or a combination of these materials. Walls can be cantilevered off a concrete footing or supported by a tied-back system.

The structural engineering team can provide structural inspections and repairs of all types. After the investigation and inspection of a structure, a report with findings and recommendations is provided along with requested repair documents.

Professional engineers at Brockenbrough offer expertise in the design of crane rails, towers, pipe bridges, pipe supports, platforms, stairs, special equipment and structure support systems along with the design of fall protection systems.

Structural engineers at Brockenbrough have experience and knowledge in restoring structures built as early as 1750. The teams have repaired and provided new brick foundations along with chimney supports while stabilizing entire buildings to resist gravity, wind and seismic forces. All work has been completed while working closely with historic architects so as to maintain the original architectural historic features and wood work.

At Brockenbrough, structural engineering teams have the expertise and experience to provide the most economical and practical designs. The latest codes to design concrete foundations and concrete structures are used, such as footings, piers, precast piles, auger cast piles, steel H-piles and more.

Brockenbrough also has broad experience designing complex concrete projects, including large buried structures, pump stations, pumphouses, waterfront piers, and water and wastewater treatment plants. Specialized experience is provided for designing complicated concrete structures that require special design of concrete reinforcing bars in seismic and wind areas.
