Mechanical Engineering

Brockenbrough’s mechanical designs are often part of large multi-disciplined projects. Because total “in-house” design services are offered, teams can coordinate work more easily and maintain quality throughout the design process. Mechanical engineering services are primarily concentrated in the commercial and governmental arenas on petroleum/fuels projects or the HVAC and plumbing systems in commercial and industrial buildings. Year in and year out, our clients depend on Brockenbrough to provide the specialized mechanical engineering services they need.

Brockenbrough has the capability to design and specify a complete refrigeration system, including industrial refrigeration systems or chilled water systems.

Brockenbrough specializes in the design of pump and piping systems, including flow calculations, pump sizing and selection, support design and piping layout drawings. Piping system hydraulic and surge analysis are accomplished using computer modeling, as are pipe flexibility analyses from the effects of seismic, thermal expansion and surge effects. Brockenbrough is familiar with current ASME and ASTM codes and specifications, as well as the utilization of all types of piping equipment, flow control valves, and instrumentation and controls.

The mechanical engineering team at Brockenbrough has provided plumbing design for many commercial and governmental facilities. The team provides water distribution piping layout, water heater sizing, drain and vent sizing, backflow prevention, fixture specifications and more.

From a small, single-zone heat pump to large industrial chiller systems, Brockenbrough can design an HVAC system for almost any application. Engineers are familiar with all aspects of heating and cooling as well as the ventilation requirements of the latest ASHRAE standards and the implementation of various analog and digital controls. They have experience in providing designs that incorporate the most recent advances in HVAC technology for obtaining LEED energy credits. Brockenbrough uses the latest computer modeling software to calculate heating and cooling loads.

Brockenbrough can provide the engineering and economic services required to implement an effective energy management program. The holistic approach taken by the mechanical engineering team will not only look at improvements in energy efficiency but will also look at the patterns of energy usage and the potential use of alternative energy sources. Individual staff are approved by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) as Certified Energy Managers (CEM). Since its inception in 1981, the CEM credential has become widely accepted and used as a measure of professional accomplishment within the energy management field. It has gained industry-wide use as the standard for qualifying energy professionals both in the United States and abroad.
