Rest Area Site Adaptions

About This Project

Brockenbrough was the Prime Consultant for replacement of three Interstate Welcome Centers and Safety Rest Areas.  The existing facilities were demolished and replaced with a new “prototype” design.  Work was completed under a record breaking fast-track design and construction period.  Design phase through full BCOM approval was completed in 77 days.  Construction phase for all three facilities was completed with incentives (through Substantial Completion) in less than one year.

The “prototype” building was taken from a previous building design by our subconsultant DJG and they updated the design to current codes, modified to add additional program area for the Welcome Centers, and improved it with other minor interior and exterior changes.  Site and utilities design included layouts for the new buildings, new walks and plazas, water and sewer services, and site lighting.  The sites required VSMP permits and approved E&SC plans.  The I-95 Caroline Southbound site required extension of an 8-inch water line in 20-inch steel casing under I-95 and a new water meter. The new facilities were designed to achieve LEED Silver certification.
