Fredericksburg Safety Rest Area and Welcome Center I-95 Southbound

About This Project

The Fredericksburg Safety Rest Area and Welcome Center was designed to create a positive first impression for visitors to the Commonwealth. The building exterior was made to complement the Federalist style historic architecture of nearby Fredericksburg, while the interior has a more modern design. The new 15,000 square-foot energy efficient facility features a large visitor center, multiple restrooms, vending and a conference room. Site features include multiple picnic shelters and seating areas.

Brockenbrough’s services included full architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing design. Brockenbrough provided concept 3D rendering through design and construction administration.

The Fredericksburg Safety Rest Area and Welcome Center was awarded the LEED Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Energy saving strategies included the use of skylights, efficient lighting and mechanical systems as well as low-flow and waterless restroom fixtures.

This project was the winner of the 2009 Engineering Excellence Grand Award by American Council of Engineering Companies, Virginia as well as the 2010 Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance Engineering Award.
