When the chiller at the historic Old City Hall in Richmond, Virginia needed to be replaced, the Virginia Department of General Services turned to Brockenbrough. The aging 250 ton chiller was located in a mechanical room under a pedestrian plaza. To install a replacement would normally require removing part of the concrete plaza which would have disrupted movement between several busy state buildings.
Brockenbrough designed a replacement system based on energy efficient modular chillers consisting of four modules (three 70 ton and one 50 ton). The modular design allowed for installation through an existing sidewalk opening without the need to remove any of the plaza or disassemble the new chiller.
To complete the project, three new pumps (chilled water, condenser water and common standby), a refrigerant leak detection system and a sand filtration system were also included.
